Bounce House Lawsuits
In the US there have even been hundreds of lawsuits involving bounce houses. Lawsuits can come from broken arms to the most severe cases, where a wrongful death lawsuit can arise. Deaths in bounce houses are not as common and most happen when the children struck their heads on a hard surface, in other cases broken necks.
Bounce House Injury Statistics
A team led by the Center for Injury Research and Policy, in 2012, published the first comprehensive study of such injuries. The researchers found that there was a 15-fold increase in such inflatable structure injuries from 1995 to 2010, when 31 children per day on average were seen in emergency departments for “an inflatable bouncer-related injury.” On average, they found that the patient was about seven years old, and most commonly sustained some kind of fracture or sprain to a leg or an arm. Almost 20% of the cases involved head and neck injuries. Kids were typically injured while falling inside the bounce house – rather than out of it and often onto another child. According to the study more than 64,000 children under 17 were treated for injuries related to an inflatable structure in US emergency rooms from 1990 to 2010. They stated that “The number and rate of pediatric inflatable bouncer–related injuries have increased rapidly in recent years. This increase, along with similarities to trampoline-related injuries, underscores the need for guidelines for safer bouncer usage and improvements in bouncer design to prevent these injuries among children.”
